frequently asked questions

How many flavors do you offer?
Smallcakes bakes and frosts 12 signature flavors of cupcakes every morning!  We feature gluten free cupcakes and rotate 3 special flavors every Tuesday and Saturday.

What are your hours?
Our Durham location at 4711 Hope Valley Road is open from 10am to 8pm (9pm in the summer) Monday through Saturday and noon to 6pm on Sundays.  Our Cary location at 1132 Parkside Main Street is open from 10am to 9pm Monday through Thursday, 10am to 10pm Friday-Saturday and noon to 8pm on Sundays.

Can I order a specialty flavor that isn’t in this weeks’ current rotation?
We bake special flavor orders in quantities as small as 8 for regular size cupcakes, 2 dozen for mini cupcakes, or a small batch of 4 for gluten free fans.

Love your full sized cupcakes!  Do you guys make minis as well?
We do!  We offer our mini-cupcakes by special order only, in more than 200+ flavors.  You can order them in quantities as low as two (2) dozen ($18/dozen).  If you place an order for minis you can always ask for up to 4 signature flavors and get a nice variety.

Speaking of Special Orders, how far ahead do I need to call?
We ask for at least 48 hours (2 days) notice for specialty orders, but appreciate as much of a heads up as possible!  If you’re placing an order that includes specialty fondant decoration, 72 hours (3 days) is required to allow the fondant to set properly.

Do you have any pictures I can look at of custom decorations for my event?
Yes!  Check out our Galleries!

I have questions about dietary restrictions…

  • Gluten Free?  Every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday!
  • Vegan?  Not yet but we’re looking into it.
  • Sugar Free?  We do not offer any sugar free options at this time.
  • Nuts? Only 2 of our signature flavors have nuts (Sundae nuts on the Hot Fudge Sunday and peanuts in our Peanut Butter Cup cupcake).  A few of our specialty flavors have pecans or almond slivers.  Please call ahead if you have specific questions about our practices in the kitchen!
  • Dairy? Our recipes do include dairy.

What do you do with your leftovers? Do you donate to charitable causes?  What do you do with your leftovers?
We bake fresh daily and never sell anything that is older.  But if you’ve kept any of our treats on your counter for a weekend, you’ll know they are still moist and delicious even after 2 or 3 days!  Our Durham store has the pleasure of supporting the mission over at Ronald McDonald House Charities – children healing because they’re surrounded by their families.  We donate our leftovers to them and are so thankful to have the opportunity to do so.  In Cary, we are partnered with Healing Transitions, a Wake County non-profit, to donate day-old cupcakes.  Healing Transitions provides recovery services to homeless and underserved men, women, and families struggling with drug addiction and alcoholism.

Do you guys offer your cupcakes for wholesale / large quantities for resale?
In some situations, yes.  Email us at cupcake@smallcakesnc.com for more info.

Should I put the cupcakes in the refrigerator overnight?
Surprisingly no!  The lower temperatures can dry out the cake and frosting.  Leave them boxed up on your counter!

Do you guys deliver?
YES!  For those of you in Durham, we've partnered with Postmates to bring you Smallcakes with just a click!  Pick your faves and Postmates will have your Smallcakes to you before you can say 'Buttercream'!
